I’m a 44 year old woman, married to a 45 year old guy. No kids. Just turned 44 this month and we’ve hit a milestone of $4 million between our 401(k)s and other assets.

I earn $600k/year and our expenses are $100k/year. I have spent 25 years in tech, in roles from junior engineer to tech chief of staff, at companies that have all been household names.

My husband used to also work in tech, but he left his job a few years ago to found a company that he runs now. It’s a portfolio of 6 craft breweries in different states.

We’re located in SoCal and we’re both healthy and physically fit. No debt on anything - not even our house. Our house is in a town that you’ve heard of and is probably worth $5 million.

But I’m really burnt out. I have been since the pandemic. I’m tired of the hours, the conflicts, the lack of work/life balance, the pressure to constantly optimize processes, and the revolving door of employees from all over the world. We also relocated for my job 6 times in the last 10 years, and I finally drew a line in the sand about that last year. The last straw was when they asked me if I’d be willing to relocate again, this time to Asia.

So I’ve been thinking that since we’re both doing well with our money, maybe it’s time for me to step away.

The problem is it feels scary to do that. It feels even scarier to tell my husband that.

At age 44, I don’t feel like I’m ready to live out of a van or sit in a rocking chair on the porch. I don’t know what my next chapter is. I am smart and capable, and I want to continue learning, making money, and staying engaged. I’ve given my all to my job for 25 years and now I want to give back to myself.

But what will that look like?
