Why do you think the child tax credit was not extended beyond Dec 2021?

In my opinion child tax credits are a win for almost everyone involved. They help parents provide for their children, stimulate demand, and keep kids out of foster care. I understand the conservative argument that people will stop working and the money will be wasted, but that argument just doesn't seem to hold any water. However, my knowledge primarily consists of what I've heard on various news programs and I don't know enough to make a truly educated decision. I don't hear many people talking about this issue so I thought I would bring it up. Thank you very much for your time.

Edit: I understand now that this is a part of the larger conflict with the Build Back Better Act, but I don't hear the child tax credits being discussed as part of this larger issue.
