Why do people always get angry when they hear about US military spending?

A good amount of anti-war protesters and people who complain about military spending (not saying everyone) would much rather the US military didn’t exist, since they don’t like the US as a superpower. <br>I don’t like war any more than the next guy. However I think we as a nation can do a lot with that money, but if we didn’t have a military, we would be extremely vulnerable. As a result, it’s almost a necessary evil. I can understand why we need to have it, but I just find it illogical when I hear people say we should divert all of that money.
