We are currently on a vacation in Europe going from one country to another. Portugal, Spain, France, Italy. Everywhere.

We are both from the US but I'm white and she's Asian. I've grown accustom to people following us around stores and getting stared at in the US but that's about it. But it's much much worse here.

We went into a local boutique in a small town in Tuscany and was immediately greeted with nasty looks and the lady working at the store basically went on her phone the entire time we were there

We go to a small restaurant in a small town in rural France and people next to us are blatantly talking shit in French with the occasional "China" thrown in

We were walking in a park when two groups of teenagers threw empty water bottles (full plastic bottles) at our direction while shouting racist remarks

We were waiting for food at a street food joint when a guy comes up to take a picture with me (presumably because he thinks I'm a celebrity) and then, upon realizing im with an Asian lady, gives us both the dirtiest look he can muster

We went into an H&M and they followed us everywhere to the point where we had to leave

And the list goes on. We do speak French, some Spanish and Italian so it's not like they think we can't understand. And the worst part is, no one has stuck up for us. They would stare or maybe mutter something under their breath but no one has confronted them

It's 2023, I know this isn't how the majority of people feel or think. Just curious if anyone has had similar experiences in this day and age. Or if it's just southern Europe. Or maybe even just small towns.
