This happened this weekend. My (23F) fiance (25M) and I went camping in our state park. We arrived Friday afternoon and planned to stay until Sunday.

On Saturday, I took a walk down by the lake, just enjoying the view, enjoying the peacefulness, the fresh air, etc. As I was walking, I noticed a guy on the other side of the lake on the walking path.

Now, before I go any further, the park we were at is NOT crowded at all, especially during the week. The guy I noticed earlier stood out to me because he just looked out of place in general. He was walking toward me, but on the other side of the lake so I couldn’t see his face. He had dark hair, a blue shirt, and jeans. He looked over at me and continued walking.

I continued on the walking path and was on the same side as the guy in blue. Eventually, after about 10 minutes of him walking towards me, we were finally on the same path. He looked at me (he had brown eyes) and smiled and kept walking. Nothing out of the ordinary up to this point.

I continued walking until I got back to the campsite. My fiance asked what I saw and I told him I just enjoyed the view and noticed a guy walking. He asked what the guy looked like and I told him. He said there was no one like that at the campsites nearby. There was one campsite near us occupied by an older couple and they were in an RV. They didn’t really venture out much, or at all from what we noticed.

So my fiance and I were sitting at the picnic table and I decided to take another walk, just to keep enjoying the view. That’s when I noticed the guy in the blue shirt AGAIN walking toward me on the other side of the lake. He looked at me again and smiled and kept walking.

When I got back to the campsite, I told my fiance what happened and he said we should be careful. After that walk, I didn’t go for anymore. We just stayed at the campsite.

It was getting dark and we decided to make a small fire. We were sitting there, roasting marshmallows when I noticed someone walking toward our campsite. When they got closer, it was the guy from the walks. I nudged my fiance and whispered “that’s the guy that kept walking towards me”.

When he walked up, he said “Hi, my name is Sam” and bad things about how he’s socially awkward. My fiance and I looked at each other and said hi. He made small talk about camping, the outdoors, etc. My fiance and I made small comments and replied to what he said. We both tried to make it clear we weren’t interested without being rude. I told him I was full from dinner and couldn’t have anymore s’mores even though he asked. I believe he asked my fiance if he wanted to play cards and he said no.

Then, he started asking questions like “What do you do for work, is your job stressful?”, “Do you have a lot of friends?”. They were odd questions, but we tried to be polite and answered as shortly as we could. I work in a office as my job and my fiance works in a warehouse. When I told Sam that, he said “That sounds stressful”.

He made a comment about how he likes camping because he doesn’t have to worry about anything out in the woods and he has no responsibilities. He said “sometimes I feel like running away from everything with someone, you know?”. I said “Oh, yeah I can see that”. He looked at me with a weird stare and smiled creepy.

I started to feel uncomfortable so I said “It was nice meeting you, have a good night!”. He looked at my fiance and said “you too, have a good night”. When he walked away, my fiance and I looked at each other and said “that was weird” and made eye contact for a second to make sure we were on the same page.

He walked towards the direction of the walking path. We were talking about how weird that encounter just was and how we’re glad he’s gone. That’s when my fiance said “He’s still walking this way”. I looked up and Sam was still walking down the walking path.

I don’t know if he could hear us, but we were talking about how creepy that was and how I don’t want to go for anymore walks because I don’t want to run into him again. That’s when Sam looks at us, right at us. I looked up at him and he smiled creepy. My fiance and I both looked at each other in confusion and wondered what he was still doing out there.

He walked for a few more minutes until he finally turned and walked into the woods. I wondered if he had a tent set up over there. My fiance and I were still talking about the weirdness of the encounter and that’s when I remembered that there was no cars parked near any of the campsites. There was one empty campsite, but no car.

The empty campsite with no car was between us and the older couple. We wondered if he was staying there, but we didn’t see a tent. My fiance walked over to the empty campsite to look around. When he came back he said there was nothing there. No tent, no car, no nothing. We were so confused and wondered where he could have been staying.

After that, my fiance and I both agreed that we are not leaving each other’s side. Sam never made another appearance, even though we kept an eye out for him for the remainder of our stay. I was so happy to leave there on Sunday and never go back.

Sam, I have no idea where you were from, what you were doing, or where you were staying, but let’s not meet again.
