AITA for allowing my brother’s ex wife to move in with me and her daughter after he kicked them out?

I was never close with my brother (36) and his ex wife K (33) but I always got along with them. They had a baby girl (4) a few years ago and I was always fond of her and loved having her around.

My brother and his wife had constant problems the entire duration of their marriage and relationship. I always found out about all the separations and divorces through social media and didn’t get involved cause it was always messy.

Their divorce was finalized over 6 months ago. During the holidays, I got a voicemail from my brother telling me his ex wife and her daughter were thrown out of the marital home and were without a place to live. I called him back, telling him I wasn’t too comfortable getting involved and he said it was fine and I shouldn’t feel obligated to help. It was more of a “cover his own ass” thing so he wouldn’t look like a complete POS.

A few days later, I was getting calls and messages from numbers I didn’t recognize. I finally answered and it was my ex SIL crying and telling me her and her daughter had been thrown out of the home with nowhere to go. She even mentioned that she was currently at a bus stop with her daughter in the rain and cried about it. I sympathized and offered to take them in temporarily until they were able to get back on their feet.

Two weeks later, they’re still with me and I take care of my niece like she’s my own, and I spoile her. My brother flipped out when he found out and called me an AH for getting in the middle. I argued that I only got involved after he told me they were homeless but he said it was only to get off the hook with our extended family. He said it wasn’t my problem and that K and her daughter weren’t my responsibility and I was overstepping boundaries.

AITA?
