Thanks to a free flight perk and the rarity of this opportunity, I am flying to Tokyo on Valentine's Day and staying through the 26th.

I would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions on the following things:

1. Best area to stay in Tokyo: I know it's a big city and staying in the "right" area can make a big difference. I will be alone and have a small budget, so something that is walkable to food and sights but doesn't break the bank. I'm interested in staying in a hostel.

2. Must-see places to visit in Tokyo: So many people have so many different opinions on what is worth seeing. I've always been interested in ancient history and temples so if there are any must-sees in that category I would love to hear about them.

3. Day trips from Tokyo: I see that Nikko is a popular choice, but I would love to hear your thoughts on Kamakura and Yokohama. I am interested in visiting and staying in other parts of Japan for a day or two, and am currently considering Osaka and Kyoto. Does anyone have thoughts on the best ways to get there, affordable places to stay, what to see and do, etc?

4. Sights and experiences in Japan: This is something that I have been dreaming of for a long time, so I want to make sure I do it "right". If you have your own suggestions for things I should see, do, eat, drink, etc, please share!

5. What should I be aware of? I've read the Japan section of Rick Steves Europe Through the Back Door and I know that Japan is a very polite society, I just want to make sure I'm being as respectful as possible. What else should I be aware of, especially as a young woman solo traveler?

Thanks in advance for your help!
