I walked into a high-end boutique store and asked to buy the cheapest dress they had. This is what happened next.

Today, my 12-year-old daughter and I stopped by an upscale boutique where all the dresses were designer. We were browsing through the racks when I asked her to pick out her favourite. My daughter found one that looked really pretty, so I took it to try on. As I was changing, a sales associate approached me and politely asked if I needed any help. I replied, "No, I just wanted to see how this dress looks on me."

She responded, "But do you have the money to pay for it?" I answered, "Yes, I do." She then asked, "Are you sure you can afford it?" I assured her, "Don't worry, I can definitely afford it." Hearing this, she asked once more, "Are you sure you can afford it?" At this point, I was starting to feel a bit annoyed, but I remained calm and told her, "I can afford it. Please don't worry. I'll pay for it." She then inquired, "How much money do you have on you?" I replied, "I have enough. Don't worry." She then said, "That dress costs Rs. 11,000."

I asked her, "Why are you asking me so many questions?" She responded, "Because I want to make sure you can afford it." I told her, "Please don't worry about it. I can afford it." She then asked if I was sure I could afford it, and I said yes. She asked again, "Are you sure you can afford it?" I answered, "Yes, I can definitely afford it." She inquired again, "How much money do you have on you?" I replied, "I have enough, don't worry." She said the dress costs Rs. 11,000.

I asked the sales associate, "Why are you repeatedly asking me if I can afford something?" She explained that they get a lot of window shoppers coming in, trying on clothes but not buying anything. I assured her that I wasn't there to waste her time, and I was genuinely interested in purchasing the dress. She apologized and said, "I understand, but you have to make sure you can afford it."

I asked her why she kept asking if I could afford it, and she said it was because they get a lot of people coming in, trying on things, and not buying anything. I said, "Listen, I don't know what kind of people come into your store, but I'm not trying things on for fun. If I try it on, I'm going to buy it. I promise. Now, can you please help me?" She apologized and said, "I know, but I want to make sure you can afford it. I don't want to waste my time." I replied, "I can afford it. Please trust me."

My daughter and I look very upper class. We both have long hair, wear expensive clothes, and have very good posture. One would never guess we are homeless. We left the changing room and approached the cashier. The same sales associate from earlier asked, "Do you have the money to pay for the dress?" Again, I assured her, "Yes, I do." She then said, "That will be Rs. 11,000 please." I handed her my debit card, and she processed the payment.

As we were about to leave, I stopped and told the sales associate, "You know, I'm going to share something with you. My daughter and I, we have nowhere to live. We sleep on the streets. We don't have any money. But today, I came into your store to buy my daughter a nice dress. We may not look like we need help, but sometimes, people who look like they have a lot may not have much at all. I hope you'll remember this and be kind to everyone who walks through that door." The sales associate smiled and replied, "Thank you, I'll keep that in mind."

I learned something valuable. No matter how someone looks, we never know what's going on in their life. I will make sure to treat everyone kindly and not judge based on appearances.

Update: I think it's important to clarify that the sales associate at the store was very friendly, kind, and not rude at all. When she asked me if I had money to buy the dress, I understood that she was just doing her job, ensuring that I, as a customer, wouldn't waste her time or the store's time. I didn't take offense to her questions because I knew she was trying to do her job well. This whole interaction was actually a good conversation between the two of us, and I hope that clears things up.
