ELI5: What are .tar files?

ok so on Windows I can zip an entire folder and compress it down to a smaller size. Then I can send that to someone and they can unzip it (extract) and it has all the files and folders in it like how I compressed it. I know they have zip on Mac and iPhone, but when I download a file it says .tar.gz. What is that?
