"Smart-Drive" is an app designed to help us go from a society of humans driving cars to a society of human's in self-driving cars.

As of today, we as a society are years away from having a commercial self-driving car solution, but we are not really prepared as a society for the day when we can buy a self-driving car from Tesla or Toyota. Your going to buy this new self-driving car but all the infrastructure and zoning, and regulations exist to support a society of humans driving cars. Just imagine what kind of playground the self-driving car industry will have once we go thru this transition.

**Why is this a problem that needs solving?**
- Why do we need an app to accomplish this? (Instead of just our smart phones, or just our cars, or just government rules)
- It's one thing to teach a car to drive perfectly, its another to manage how a whole city/state behaves with the arrival of a self-driving car service.
- Why do we need a single app over multiple apps to accomplish this?
- It's one thing to translate English to Spanish. It's another to translate English to Spanish to Chinese to German, and sometimes English to Spanish to Portuguese to Japanese.

**What kind of functionality would "Smart-Drive" provide to help this transition?**
[This is a post in r/postyourappideas, where the goal is to make a app that does everything talked about below, and then sell it for some money]

Here is what I wrote down so far...

1. **Who's driving?** - a feature where you can see (from your phone) who is driving every car around you. If its a human, or an algo. Knowing the answer to this question will change the way you act on the road.
2. **Shaded roads** - when you open the app, you should see all the roads around you, and see if they are shaded red or green. Red = "Dangerous to humans". Green = "Safe for humans".
3. **What is the danger of this road?** - as a human driver, the app should tell you why a road is dangerous to you and your family. Knowing the answer to this question will change the way you act on the road.
4. **Local rules** - in every city, there will be various local rules/laws about self-driving car behavior. (ie: as a self-driving car, you must give humans extra space) The app should know all these rules (for every city). Knowing the answer to this question will change the way you act on the road.
5. **Car info** - if you see a car with a certain brand of self-driving hardware, what does that mean? What are its strengths and weaknesses? Knowing the answer to this question will change the way you act on the road.
6. **able to open a ticket with the authorities** - if you think a self-driving car has broken a rule, you can file a ticket thru this app.
7. **Decentralized traffic court** - as a society, we haven't figured out what it means for a self-driving car to break a traffic rule, and how to punish the car or its owner. The app should provide a simple justice system for these cases, like a community run restorative justice circle, or a community run sharia court.
8. **Reviews of self-driving car products** - what do other humans think of the self-driving car products available for purchase or subscription?
9. **Where are the charging stations?** - a feature that tells you where all the charging stations are on your route. Along with how busy those charging stations are at the moment, and how long ago they were inspected and certified by a trusted mechanic.
10. **Which intersections are reliable?** - which intersections on your route are confirmed to have the latest self-driving carable lights? Along with a field for humans to enter notes about the intersection.
11. **Car insurance** - this app should also tie into your car insurance provider. Is your car insurance adjusted based on if you are driving, or if the algo is driving?
12. **Maintenance** - your cars maintenance schedule (ie: oil change 3,000 miles from now) should be connected with this app. The app should know what is the condition of your cars tires? Your battery? Your sensors? Are they calibrated properly?
13. **Looks like you have a sensor problem. Did you know?** - if your algo has detected a problem with one of your car's many sensors, the app should let you know and help you repair it.
14. **Open source community** - there should be an online community where we as a society can share open-source algo improvements, or open-source hardware improvements. Along with data on how well these improvements actually work.
15. **How would you like to handle his situation?** - this app should also provide different levels of "human-in-the-loop" interaction. (ie: at some intersections, the algo knows it should yield, but not if it should yield to humans or other cars, so it will ask you whats your preference)
16. **How would you like to handle this situation going forward?** - - after it asks you what to do in this situation, it can also prompt you to set a preference for how to handle that situation in the future.
17. **Taking notes** - humans should be able to take notes on the road about what just happened, or what they just observed. (ie: there is a pothole here)
18. **Uploading video** - humans should be able to upload videos of what the algo did wrong, or what the algo did right.
19. **Integration with NHTSA and local highway authorities** - governments should be able to use the app to get data from all the self-driving cars on the road, and make decisions based on that. They should be able to also communicate with all the self-driving cars on the road, or certain cars, or certain types of cars.
20. **Is he drunk?** - a feature where you can report if you believe a human driver is drunk, or otherwise impaired. Does the app prescribe the meaning of "impaired"? How will we as a society decide who is impaired and who is not?

**Do you know of any app or service that already has these functionalities?**

This isn't even a complete list. Can you think of more functionalities that would be useful as society transitions to a self-driving car future? Do you know of any existing app/service that already has these functionalities? Can you think of any functionalities that would be missing in a transition from a human-driven car society to a self-driving car society, that might be better addressed by something other than an app?
