I think everyone has a different study style, but I want to share what works for me, and why I think it works.

This past semester, I was very busy. I carried a heavy course load, worked 20 hours a week, and prepared for the LSAT. On top of this, I was learning to manage my time for the first time in my life. Because I had no choice but to, I learned how to stay productive in study sessions, and minimize the time I needed to review by saving mental energy for the long haul. I used the 90 minute interval to help me.

When you sit down to work, your natural focus, unless you are on a deadline, will probably last about 60 minutes. At that point, you will start to feel tired, or slightly distracted. I have found that if I push myself to continue working for 30 minutes, my mental energy will slightly increase again, and then I will crash, hard. So, I use this spike and crash to help me. I work for 60 minutes, take a 10 minute break, and then work for another 30 minutes, when the spike hits. After that, no matter how focused I am, I take a 60 minute break to rest.

When you rest, make sure you are truly resting. Do something you enjoy, something easy, and that will distract you from anything in the academic world. I go for a walk, or watch a TV show I know well enough that my brain can just relax while I watch it. This has helped me stay focused when I do sit down to work, and ensures that I am absorbing as much as I can, because my brain isn’t tired.

I followed this schedule consistently, and found that my brain honestly didn’t feel tired, ever. I had the energy to do everything I needed to do, and I was able to get good grades while doing so. Also, the admissions tests I took went much more smoothly, and I was not tired or distracted at all. I felt great for the entire thing, and my brain didn’t stop working until a few days after I was done.

I found that my brain had much more energy, and that I was able to retain information better than I ever had before, following this schedule.

I truly hope this helps you, and will encourage you to play around with what works best for you.
