Am I missing something about habits? Why do people spend so much time talking about how to improve habits?

I have habits like everyone else. I eat, I shower, I brush my teeth. I’d probably go a month without showering and a week without brushing my teeth if I didn’t have the habit of doing them. These are good habits, and I know it. I don’t need to do any habit training to figure it out.

Seems like the whole conversation about habits is people putting themselves through like a week or two of pain in order to create a habit that they know they need to do, but don’t do? I know I need to eat healthily, and I’m not going to spend two weeks creating a habit that I’m going to get bored of after two weeks and spend another two weeks creating a different habit. I just make healthy food choices most of the time and I realize that it’s okay if I don’t do it every time. I know I need to exercise regularly, and I’m going to go for a walk if I’m feeling a little tired or spend 10 minutes stretching if I’m feeling creaky. I’m not going to spend a week creating a habit for the precise schedule and routine of exercise that I’m going to do on precisely specific days at a specific time. I’m going to go for a run at whatever time of day I feel like it and whatever day of the week that I feel like it. I will schedule appointments, because I need to make sure that someone else is also there. I’m not going to schedule anything else because it’s my schedule and it’s okay if I don’t always do it on a Monday at 2 PM.

I feel like I have better things to do with my time than create all these habits that I’ll eventually get bored of and then I’ll have to spend more time creating a different habit. I’m just going to do the activity because I know that I want to do it, not because I have managed to brainwash myself or make it into a mindless habit.
