This is a question that many have asked, and the difference can be quite difficult to realise. It's very important to be able to realise the difference between these two ideologies.

Communsm, also known as Marxism Leninism, is the idea of "of the people, by the people, for the people". This means literally creating a soviet state with NO hierarchy or government, and NO classes. Everything is equally distributed among all, and everyone works towards the betterment of the state, only for the benefit of the people. This would have HUGE benefits for the people as a whole, but the problem with Communism is that there are no laws, government, or class. Creating this would be very, VERY difficult. This is why Socialism is becoming more popular.

Socialism is the idea of the people owning the means of production, but still having a government. The government would distribute everything equally, the people would vote for the laws, and everything is controlled by the government. This would make creating such a state MUCH easier, because the government can take charge and enforce laws. You may be thinking "What's the difference if the government controls everything? Why isn't this discrimination?"

The difference is that the government has EVERYONE's best interest in mind and takes EVERYONE's opinion. The government only works for the people. This means that the people have a say in what happens to the country.

Communism and Socialism are often confused, but they are quite different.
