My tenant just passed away, and the amount of crap they left behind is astounding.

I've been a landlord for several years, and this is the first time a tenant has passed away while renting. This person had been renting a separate, externally accessed mother in law suite in the basement of our home. We never had any issues with them, and they had been staying with us for about 6 years.

They were in their 70's, and suffered a heart attack last week. No one called us until a few days later and told us what had happened. We were pretty saddened by the news, they were a nice person.

Now we are dealing with the aftermath. No one in their family wants anything, except for a few sentimental objects. We have been dealing with the mess left behind for 4 days, and we're still not done. It is crazy. Everything from half full toothpaste tubes and hair gel to thousands of old threads of useless newspaper, hundreds of paperback romance novels. Its crazy.

I'm not entirely sure what we will end up doing with everything, but we have filled a handful of 4x4 dumpsters with garbage, and another 10 or so donation center drop-offs worth of stuff.

I'm glad that we are tackling this head on, because the longer it sits, the more miserable I will be. But this has also made me realize just how much garbage I have accumulated myself, and how much I would prefer to start simplifying my life.
