First off, I love your work, Mr. Scalzi. I think you’re an incredibly talented science fiction author, and I love your commentary and observations about the world.

But whatever possessed you to come up with the concept of the term “fan”?

I’ve been counting up all of the different creative projects I’ve worked on in my life, and I’ve lost track. There are hundreds of them. And for each of those projects, somebody had to tell the story, right?

Which means that I’ve thought of a good story for every single thing that I have ever liked, and you, Mr. Scalzi, have been at least partially responsible for a good number of them.

In high school, it was Star Frontiers. It was…fine. I’ve got a whole binder full of Star Frontiers campaigns that I thought up in high school, from future planets of the federation to modern medieval kingdoms.

In college, it was Star Wars d20. It was…also fine. I was really into the whole Knights of the New Republic thing, so I wrote up a whole campaign based on a planet with a bunch of different colonies, as well as an entire space station dedicated to training Force users.

After college, I went back to Star frontiers, and then switched briefly to SWSE before getting really into the concept of a Star Trek RPG. I worked for a while on it, and then kind of dropped it and moved on to other games, such as dnd or PF etc, but Star Trek was always there, bugging me in the back of my head, haunting my dreams.

So, when I heard that Modiphius was going to be doing a Star Trek RPG, I was going to be all over it like Kevin Conroy on a chicken pot pie. Consequentially, I have spent the last few years playing the absolute crap out of ST:RPG, and even running a few campaigns here and there, including a couple of the (In my opinion) incredibly awesome campaign books that you people have written.

And every time I try to do something, I think up a story. And that’s going to be my fan. The urge to think up a story for every detail, no matter how mundane. And that’s all your fault.

So:

F*** you, John Scalzi.

icolor
