I know it’s been discussed to death, but I’m convinced I’m simply not cut out for breeding

A little background, I have been doing this since 2013. I’m a small backyard breeder, doing it because I love the breed. I only had 1 or 2 litters per year and have had a bit of a waitlist. I have always been very selective in who I sell to, to the point where I would strongly prefer to keep a dog if I couldn’t find it a perfect forever home. I have done all of the health testing for my dogs, and they get regular veterinary checkups. I have had plenty of successes and happy forever homes, but I also have had too many disasters. I have cried more about my breeding program in the last 9 months than in the last 9 years.

The latest incident has been a poorly chosen stud dog that we now believe has caused every puppy to inherit a deformity that will likely be the end of my breeding program. He appeared to be a perfect choice, and I was completely blindsided by this discovery.

I’m sure there are plenty of breeders who would be able to do better, but I’m just not sure where else to go with this program. I can’t put my dogs through anymore heartbreak. I have two litters on the ground now and a third due this Spring. After that, I will be looking at rehoming the parents. I will be sad to see them go, but I want them to have the best lives possible. At least they will be happy.
