Why did there seem to be a lot of anti Japanese sentiment in America prior to Pearl Harbor?

Just kind of curious about this. I figure that Pearl Harbor (itself) was obviously a major trigger for anti Japanese sentiment, but from what I've read it seems like the sentiment existed beforehand.
