Why do I get treated like it's my fault for other people's poor mental health?

I have recently been told by the guy I was into that he thinks it would be too much pressure on him to be with me. He’s said he’s mentally fragile at the moment and he would find being in a relationship a lot of stress and that he’s worried he would ‘hurt himself’ because of it. He also told me that he feels guilty for doing this and wanted to help me but I said it’s fine, it’s not your fault.

I feel uncomfortable with this, because essentially I’ve been told that my presence is enough to drive someone to kill themselves. I feel like I’ve become some kind of unasked-for responsibility. His mental health is not my fault, I’ve done nothing but be nice to him since the day I met him. I feel like I’m owed an apology but he’s made it clear he doesn’t believe he’s done anything wrong.
