[Parent]

I was thinking that salt is probably one of the most widely used products. Aside from water and maybe milk or bread, it's probably the most commonly consumed product in the world. I use salt every single day.

It's also used to preserve food, in lots of applications in medicine, and the US is totally dependent on salt for its roads in winter. So my question is how/where does the world get so much salt? My guess is that the world gets most of its salt from salt mines, and that these are widely distributed. But that's just a guess.

Edit: wow, this blew up. First, thanks everyone for your responses! Second, sorry Sub if this was a dup. I've read hundreds of threads here, but only posted a handful.
