My daughter asked what would happen if you hung your head in a freezer overnight. So I found out.

My stepdaughter, Miriam, is 11. She’s been staying with us for two months every year for the last four years and each year I find myself loving her more and more. A few days ago my wife was out working and I was helping to entertain Miriam to the best of my ability. For most of this trip she’s been fascinated by the idea of cryosleep. This is partially because my wife’s great aunt recently came down with a serious illness that was temporary non-life threatening (TLDR; - Old lady breaks hip and we need to give her suspended animation until they find a cure for her disease). Miriam thinks cryosleep is the coolest thing ever, and is fascinated by cryogenics in general and the idea of freezing humans.

Knowing that my wife would be late at the office, we were searching for things for Miriam to do in the apartment that wouldn’t be boring for the last few hours until my wife got home. About half an hour into this, I had a brilliant idea. We have an extra freezer in our apartment that isn’t used for anything, so I asked Miriam if she wanted to see what would happen if you put your head in a freezer. She was immediately into it, so we walked over to the freezer and I stuck my head inside.

Instantly I knew that this was a bad idea. There was immediate pain that was almost indescribable, and I had to pull my head out. Miriam asked if I was okay, and I was shocked to see that I was bleeding. It was then that I realized that, while my face had begun to bleed shortly after being in the freezer, I hadn’t actually pulled my head out. As I saw my face bleeding, it fell to the ground in front of me, and for a brief second, I could see it before it was gone.

I’m writing this now in the hospital. My wife has been by my side for the last six hours. She’s been crying the whole time, and I can’t really blame her. The doctors won’t let Miriam see me, which is probably for the best.

But my injuries are weird. They’re not really sure why they can’t find my head, but they don’t think I’d survive the surgery. So they’re saying that I might be left like this forever.

I just wish I could see Miriam again.
