CMV: Telling a woman she does things "like a man" is not a compliment. It's incredibly sexist.

I've seen a trend of women getting told things like "you burp like a man", "you can drink like a man", "you eat like a man", "you can throw a football like a man" and accept it as a compliment.

First off, it's sexist because it inherently assumes that men are better at these things. It's saying, "Wow, you can burp louder than any woman I've ever met! You must be one of those burpy men!"

But what if men aren't better at these things? What if the reason why some men can burp so loudly is because they've spent their whole lives practicing? There's this weird expectation that because of testosterone, men are naturally better at some things than women. But if you've spent your whole life practicing your drinking, eating, throwing, burping, etc., of course you're going to be better at it than someone who doesn't drink, eat, throw, or burp as much, regardless of their gender!

And what if a woman is better at these things than the men around her? This doesn't happen because women are naturally better at things than men, it's because of years of hard work and practice. I have a friend who is not a big drinker, but she's extremely good at drinking. If she were a man, you bet your ass she'd be doing keg stands at every frat party and the guys would be like "wow, he can REALLY drink!" But because she's a woman, they just assume she can't drink as much and tell her "Wow, you can really drink!"

And what if you told a man, "you can cook like a woman!" or "you can clean like a woman!" or "you can raise kids like a woman!" Do you think he'd take that as a compliment? No, he'd be offended that you just insulted his gender by assuming that women are better at these things.

So, no. Telling a woman that she does things "like a man" is not a compliment. It's sexist.

Edit: wow, this got a lot more attention than I thought it'd get. For those of you who disagree, just know that I'm glad we can have our own opinions, even if you think I'm wrong :) :) :)
