Pretty much what the title says. I'm sure most of us take a lot from books, comics, and movies, but I love trying to translate the mechanics of video games to tabletop RPGs and other forms of media.

For example, while my players aren't too keen on it, I've borrowed the concept of in-game actions from Shadowrun. In Shadowrun, you have two actions each turn. I liked that concept because I wanted to better manage turn order for a game with a full 6-player party, and I thought that would help keep them involved. So far we've got two combat actions, one minor action, and one reaction. It's working out pretty well in combat, and I've been thinking of applying it to skillchecks as well. I'm thinking the plan for skillchecks is 2 actions, 1 reaction.

Another thing I've been considering is using a system of Active and Passive Abilities from videogames. These are abilities your character has that you don't have to choose to use in the moment, versus abilities you have to specifically choose to use. In practice, I think this will mean that a passive ability is baked into your skillchecks, while an active ability is something you decide to use to gain a bonus.

For example, in a game I'm building I'm going to be using a skill called PE (perception and empathy) that combines all of your social skills (and your ability to notice your surroundings) into one stat. This isn't incredibly unique, there are a lot of RPG systems that have this skill. However, let's say you're a ranger who spends a lot of time in the woods tracking animals. I could grant you a passive ability, something like "veteran tracker", which gives you a bonus to all PE checks you make related to tracking. Or, let's say you're a negotiator. You could gain an active ability to gain a bonus to PE checks for a short period of time, or you could gain a passive ability that lets you react to situations by gaining a bonus to your PE checks in the moment.

I could also integrate a "Focus" system that gets used in the Elder Scrolls games, where certain abilities you have are innate to your character but require you to "Focus" them to really bring out their full power.

Is there anything you like to integrate from videogames?
