I am European. I am born and raised in Western Europe. I have lived in Central and Southern Europe. I have experienced what good it has brought us and the massive, massive problems that it has caused. I am not going to provide sources, this is mostly anecdotal and data from the European Union. I am not a xenophobe or racist, I believe that immigrants should be welcomed and treated fairly, with respect for the native culture and citizens. I understand that immigration cannot and should not completely stop or be halted, but there are huge issues that need to be addressed, and that effective immigration policy can improve. This post is not made out of hate, but love for the continent and the inhabitants that I care about, and the desire to change for the better.

The idea of a borderless, migrant friendly European Union is great in a utopian, unrealistic world where economy, security and culture are not an issue. It is not such. With the huge influx of migrants from countries of poorer culture or with poorer standards of living, we have faced a huge amount of problems. Firstly, there is the issue of crime and safety. In many cities, you see a rise in organised crime, drug dealing, assault and petty theft committed by migrants. Again, not saying that all them are inherently criminal, but with the lack of jobs, money, poor integration policies and a huge difference in culture, drugs and crime is as good as it gets for many of them. There are huge statistics that show migrants are more likely to be criminalized. For example, seven out of ten dealers caught in Athens are Albanians, and in Italy, for every two jailed, one is Roma. We see the statistics everywhere, and are these An enormous amount of migrants are from the Middle East and Africa. Many migrants from the Middle East and Africa cannot and will not work. They get money hand in hand from the government, yet abuse our welfare system. We have huge issues of migrants drawing on our welfare system, abusing it, and tricking the government by drawing benefits for children that do not exist. We also see issues with migrants who are willing to work, but take jobs that citizens do not want. However, it is all too common to see migrants undercutting low paid jobs, thus creating even more turmoil for those who want to work in said low paying jobs. The most common example is immigrants working in agriculture, construction or farming, and working for much, much less than the minimum wage. Similarly, migrants also take jobs that are high paying, yet still leave natives without work. As they are willing to take jobs that are high in demand for much lower pay, they are often preferred.

The huge influx of migrants also pose security issues. ISIS have stated that they will use the migrant crisis to get terrorists inside European countries. It has been proved that many terrorists travel inside migrant waves. The best example here is the Paris attackers. Two of the attackers raided Paris, travelled from Syria through the Greek island of Leros as migrants, meeting up in Budapest before making their way to Paris, where they massacred innocent civilians.

There is also the issue of infrastructure. In some countries, especially Southern Europe, infrastructure is already poor. Poor roads, few hospitals, schools, housing. With a huge influx of migrants, this puts an even larger strain on already poor infrastructure, creating a vicious cycle where it only gets worse.

Lastly, there is the issue of culture. Migrants are often not made to integrate into society, meaning that there is huge divide between migrants and non-migrants. There is an expectation from migrants that the native citizens must change their lives to accommodate the migrants, not the other way around. There is an expectation from migrants that the citizens must adapt to their culture, not the other way around. This is just not how it should be, and creates a huge divide between the two. There are also huge issues of migrants not respecting the native culture. For example, many migrants refuse to adapt to the local way of life, meaning that there is a clash of cultures. Many migrants refuse to speak the native language, instead creating their own communities where they speak their own language. Many migrants refuse to allow their cousins, daughters, sisters, mothers or wives to adapt to the native way of life, instead creating a culture where they are allowed little to no personal freedom, and little to no respect. This is extremely problematic, and leads to clashes of people who want to integrate into society, and those who do not. Many also bring unacceptance practices to Europe, such as FGM or honour killings, which is completely, utterly and totally unacceptable.

I am not saying that all migrants are bad, or even the majority. There are huge amounts of migrants who are trying their best to adapt, to integrate, to work, to contribute, to learn the language, to speak to the citizens, befriend the citizens, to be friendly with the citizens, to be an asset to the economy. There are huge amounts of migrants who were born and raised in European countries. I am not saying that a complete ban on migrants is required, nor am I saying that migrants are inherently bad. I am saying, however, that there is a huge need to stop allowing migrants in, and instead focus on integrating those that are already here, focus on giving jobs to those who want to work, focus on getting rid of those who abuse our welfare system, focus on those who are willing to integrate, rather than allowing millions more migrants in, who bring in millions more problems. There is a need for an effective immigration policy, one that does not allow migrants to come in willy nilly, but instead allows migrants to come in where they are properly vetted, where they are allowed to come in at a stable, steady flow, where they are made to integrate with society. This is not the case, currently.

Immigration is not inherently bad, but the influx that we are allowing is creating an unsustainable amount of problems for the continent, its citizens, and those who already live here.
