Just had a student come to me after school and burst into tears and honestly I didn’t know what to do

I’m a high school English teacher and this week we’re doing a lesson about a short story on how to do an allegory. Anyways we did a PowerPoint and watched the video of the story and then we talked about it for a few minutes and done some discussion group questions. Even then, there was still time left so we watched a crossword puzzler video, which usually calms the class down and it’s a good ending for the day.

When kids started leaving I had one of my quieter students (let’s call him Sam) come up to me and just started crying. I was completely taken back and I got up from my still in shock and gave him a pat on the back and told him everything’s fine and it’s ok. Then he told me he’s been doing a lot of crying lately and then he told me about a big fight him and his parents had. I did the same thing and gave him a hug and told him I’m so sorry I’m here for you. He said he feels like he doesn’t have anybody to talk to. I told him he has no one else to talk to he can talk to me. I then told him everything will be fine, and he’s a great student and he’s got a bright future ahead of him. I said if you need help, whether it’s grades or help, you know you can come to me and I’ll help you. I also told him he’s a great person and I could tell that. I told him if you ever need help with school or anything else or just want to talk, I’m always here for you.

This was just a weird situation that I had never dealt with before. I’ve had students cry in class but never to this extent that I needed to sit down and talk to them like that.

Am I missing something here, I felt like I did the right thing, but am I missing something?
