I accidentally left my dorm building on fire one night and I'm kind of scared

Let me explain. I go to a pretty big university in the United States and I dorm on campus. My dorm building is a high rise building with 8 floors. I live on floor 2 which is lucky considering the elevators only run from floor 3-8. I don't know why they made it that way but whatever. The stairs and the elevators (and our laundry machines and mail boxes) are located in the center of the floor. On each side of the floor are the rooms. On a few rooms there are a few kitchen. Those are what the residents on each floor are supposed to share. There is one large kitchen per floor in the center of each floor and a few smaller ones (2-3 I believe) in different areas of the floor. My floor has only one which is kind of a bummer because it's the only one we have to share.

It's pretty close to my room so that's why I use it most of the time. It's right next to the entrance of the floor so if you walk through the door you kind of walk into the kitchen. On one side of the kitchen is the stairs, elevators, laundry, and mailboxes. On the other side are the rooms. In front of you is the main hall that has all the rooms. The main hall has plenty of emergency lights and sprinklers and the sprinkler system is very sensitive. So if you are cooking and the fire alarm goes off you can just go outside and tell the fire department what happened and they will turn off the alarm. It's not uncommon for the alarm to go off at night or in the morning when people are cooking.

I don't know what made me do this but last night I decided to boil some water but before I did I turned off the stove. I had already filled the pot with water and put it on the stove so as soon as I turned it on water started pouring down into the electrical outlets. I'm not sure what happened because the stove has different settings, like there's a switch to turn it on and once you turn it on there are these buttons you can press to control the heat. I'm sure I turned the heat all the way down but somehow the stove was able to produce a flame. The flame was very big and it was hitting the side of the kitchen wall which is made out of wood. I didn't notice the flame at first but once I did I grabbed a fire extinguisher and sprayed it. I didn't spray it correctly and most of the foam went on the pot and on the floor. I was getting really scared because the fire was still burning.

Once I sprayed most of the fire extinguisher I knew I had to run. I didn't have time to figure out how to use it correctly. I still had the fire extinguisher in my hand but I didn't have the energy to spray it anymore. I ran out of the kitchen and down the stairs. I didn't stop running until I got outside. Once I got outside I realized I still had the fire extinguisher. I didn't know what to do so I just left it on the floor outside the dorm and walked away. I walked across campus to the hospital and once I got there I explained to the receptionist what happened. They called the fire department for me and the receptionist tried to calm me down while we waited.

When the fire department got there they said they had to get in the dorm so they called campus police and explained the situation to them. Campus police unlocked the dorm for the firefighters and once they were inside they came back outside and told me it was okay. They said the fire was gone but that the kitchen was badly damaged. The fire had gone into the walls so they had to make sure it was gone and the sprinkler system was still on when they got there. It's been a few hours and I still haven't gone back to the dorm. I'm currently staying with a friend and I'm really scared. I just wanted to boil some water and I ended up burning down a kitchen.

I feel really bad because the kitchen was the only one for floor 2 and the only one that's on the same side as most of the rooms. A lot of people used it and now they don't have it anymore. I'm kind of scared of what people are going to say or think when they find out. I don't know if the university or my dorm is going to sue me for damages or kick me out. I'm also really scared of accidentally setting more fires in the future. I don't know what to do.

Update: the fire alarm ended up going off after I left and people in the building went outside. The fire department said that if I had stayed in the building the fire would have reached my room. They also said the fire would have easily spread to the other floors. They believe the sprinkler system would have been able to stop the fire from spreading but they're not positive. They said it depends on the severity of the fire. It's been a few days and pretty much everyone knows what happened. A few people blamed me for the incident and the head of residential life emailed me saying I did an excellent job getting the fire department and getting out of the building. He said I did the right thing. I think I'm going to be charged for damages but I won't be kicked out.
