My laptop is too old to run applications for my coding school, and I don't have enough money for a new one

I bought my laptop about 8 years ago. I've had to replace the battery twice, and the original screen died last year, but I was able to purchase a replacement screen for it and get it fixed. Even with its age, I thought it was doing alright for how much I had already spent on it. I was able to write reports for school, do my remote job (although it did use a lot of memory), and was able to use my laptop for other basic needs.

However, I got into a coding bootcamp in June, after not being able to find a job (due to no one wanting to hire me after having to leave my previous job for health reasons). I had a friend who was in a coding bootcamp last year, and he's now working for Microsoft, so I thought it would be good for me career-wise and it'd be something I could do for remote work. I didn't have much luck getting hired, so I thought this would be a good career move.

The bootcamp is going well, but my laptop is struggling to run the applications they tell us to use. Visual Studio Code and GitHub Desktop were the first to slow things down, but when we had to do a project in React, it just wouldn't work. The screen would lock up, go black, and then I would have to hit the power button to turn it off. It would do this over and over, and nothing would change. This happened even when I was trying to follow along in class, so I felt embarrassed (although I don't think anyone noticed). I have been doing my assignments on my school's computers, because they run way faster than my laptop, but it is a 35 minute drive to get there, and gas is expensive.

I talked to my(pc repair)guy, and he said he would need to replace the hard drive, RAM, and CPU, and that it would be nearly $2000. I told him I didn't think I had that, and I would probably just buy a whole new laptop for that price. He agreed and said that would be the best option. I asked what a new laptop with those specifications would cost, and he said it would probably be around $3000. I don't have that, so I don't know what to do. I have a desktop, but it's even older than my laptop, and I don't know if it could be fixed. I really want to finish this bootcamp, but I don't know if I'll be able to.

Sorry for the long post. Does anyone have any suggestions?
