A few years ago, while traveling down I-10 towards New Orleans, I made a pit stop at a small gas station. I parked my car and began to pump gas.

I noticed a peculiar man. He was a tall, lanky, greasy looking guy who I thought may have been homeless. Or high. Or both.

This man hovered around me. I was too concerned to go inside the station market to report him.

So after a few minutes of pumping gas, I got a call from my friend. I decided to answer and strike up a conversation to see if it would scare this man away.

The plan worked, and shortly after I answered the call, he began walking away.

A few minutes later, while still on the call, I went inside to pay for my gas. I handed the attendant my card and he asked if everything was okay.

“Yeah, there’s just a really weird guy wondering around out there” I replied, trying to make small talk.

The attendant gave me a weird look, leaned in close, and whispered “Did he hear you talking about being alone? I saw you on the phone and I couldn’t warn you in time.”

I said “yeah, I was talking to my friend.”

He said “well, I hope you’re not actually alone because that man now thinks you’re alone in your car.”

That line sent chills down my spine and I never answered another phone call at a gas station again.
