So last night I flew from Bangkok to Dubai and am never going to set foot in Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) ever again.

The flight itself was fine but the check in and security was an utter nightmare.

I arrived at the airport at 8pm for a 11.30pm flight. I had already checked in and had my boarding pass and baggage claim tag on my phone.

Step 1: Check in counter: I went to the bag drop off counter and the staff asked for my passport and boarding pass. After she scanned my boarding pass she asked me for my visa for my destination. I am an Indian citizen and I said we get a visa on arrival for the UAE. I even showed her my approved application on my phone and also my return ticket to Bangkok. She still insisted I needed to show her my visa. At this point I asked for her supervisor and lo and behold, the supervisor agreed with her and said I needed to show them the visa approval mail. I lost my temper and said vedio call my mother and ask her to mail it to me and then I’ll show it to her.

Then: “oh I’ll just scan it and tag your bag and you’re done”.

Step 2: Passport control: after the bag drop off I walked to passport control. The lady at the counter asked me for my hard copy boarding pass. I said I have a digital one on my phone. She insisted i get a hard copy from the kiosk. So I go to the kiosk and generate a hard copy boarding pass. I come back and she asks me for my visa for Thailand! Now I have a work permit and because of that I have a re entry permit and a multi entry visa. I explained that to her in Thai and she didn’t understand what I meant. I showed her my visa and explained it to her in English and still she didn’t understand so i asked her to call her supervisor and she started arguing with me, saying no no no please wait. So I sat down and said I’m not moving till a supervisor comes. The argument got louder and louder and security guards arrived. The supervisor asked me what the issue was and I said the lady wants to see my visa and my boarding pass. Now I have a visa for the next 2 years till 2025 and she couldn’t understand why.

Then: “ok sorry sir, you’re through”

Step 3: Security check: I keep my laptop and chargers in my bag while passing through security but I always take out my water bottle. So I walk to security and the lady at the scanner is speaking to her friend in Thai about how pretty and nice she looks. So I ask her if she could please scan my bags. She says yes sure but first put your water bottle, laptop and chargers out. I kept my laptop and chargers in my bag and she insists i take it out. So I get my bag back, unpack my laptop and chargers and then they scan my bag again.

Then: “ok you’re through sir”

So after 4 hours of check in and passport control and security I was finally in the departures area. I was so hungry and decided to eat at the very famous Som Tam Jay So.

The flight was great and the airline food was great as well. We landed at Dubai and i had a very smooth transit. I’m never going through BKK again.

Edit: this is my first ever post on Chambers and wow! Thank you for the gold, silver and awards!

Edit: I wrote this post as soon as I landed in Dubai as it was fresh on my mind. But after reading all your comments:

1. Maybe I shouldn’t have argued with her but sometimes you just lose it.

2. Just because I am an expat in Thailand doesn’t mean I am “used to it”.

3. I am a white guy living in Bangkok as an expat and sometimes can’t even speak Thai.

4. I can’t believe how many of you guys hate Indians!
