I read the “if you want a coffee shop coffee, you have to clean something” challenge on r/minimalism and have been doing it for the last week. I’d like to share some thoughts!

When I cleaned, I watched the hour long supercut of the coffee shop at the table next to you and I was so touched by it as well as inspired to keep my home the way I like it. I want to say that you have my permission to share this or add it to a post!

I have a small 3 bedroom house with 2 people living in it. It was relatively easy to maintain, but we had started to get a little out of touch with things.

Here are the areas I cleaned:

Monday: Kitchen cabinets

My kitchen cabinets were kind of a mess. Dating back to when we moved in, we had been using the “throw it in there” method. It wasn’t a mess to the point that you couldn’t get through it, but it wasn’t organized. I took everything out and put back just what I needed. I also unsubscribed to all the food subscriptions and have asked friends to come by and take whatever they’d like. It never made sense to me to pay to have food delivered at my convenience and then pay again to dispose of it. I made the cappuccino I mentioned at the end of this post while listening to coffee shop at the table next to you and it felt amazing having everything organized and easy to find.

Tuesday: Guest Room Closet

My guest room closet was a bit of a mess. For some reason, my wife was throwing empty bags we used to carry groceries home into the closest. It was mostly clean otherwise, but had that same “throw it in there” feeling. I also found a little white moth. I was ready to freak out, but after doing some research, I believe it was just a stray that had come in through the window. I swept and vacuumed that room and the guest room, wiped everything down, and reorganized it. It’s now a space that I would be comfortable having someone stay in.

Wednesday: Guest Room

I did the same in the guest room, wiping everything down, sweeping, and vacuuming. I cleared off and dusted the furniture and cleaned the mirror. I was happy to find the dust we were collecting on things were just dust from the cats and dogs, and not from moths. I had been thinking we just needed to dust it, but now that I mention it, it makes sense that dust would collect in a room we never go into. I also hung up a picture of my niece that was on the floor. The whole room feels really nice now.

Thursday: Living Room

The living room was a mess. We got a new couch, but it came in a big box. I was going to take it to the dump, but it was more difficult than I thought to break down. I also didn’t have a lot of time to do it. So, I just left it there, but then I started to leave other things there as well. It was a real mess. I cleaned it all up in a few hours. It looks great!

Friday: Desk/Office Area

The desk had gotten a bit out of hand. I had been collecting receipts to send to my accountant for taxes and I finally got them all organized. I also went through a big container of random items, like buttons, old pens, rulers, screws, and a lot of other miscellaneous items. I cleaned everything off and organized it. It feels great!

Saturday: Bathroom

For the bathroom, I mainly just cleaned the mirrors and the shower. I was going to clean the floors, but I didn’t have the energy to do it.

Sunday: Bedroom

Our bedroom is mostly clean, but we have one of those under bed storage drawers that was a mess. I took everything out and went through it. It was a mix of clean laundry, dirty laundry, and random clutter. I sorted it all out and was able to keep a lot of the clothes. It was a good chance to go through old clothes and keep donating/trash things that don’t fit anymore.

It was a really great exercise in getting our home in order. I was able to go through a lot of cluttered areas and put things in their place. It’s been a productive week and I’m looking forward to maintaining it.

The first coffee I made with my newly clean kitchen was cappuccino that tasted like it was made at a coffee shop. It was amazing. And, it felt great to know that I made it myself in the comfort of my new clean kitchen.
