I have a $2300 per month after tax Roth IRA and am thinking about moving to Washington, D.C. for work. If I live alone in a 1-bedroom for $1800 per month, that leaves me $500 per month for everything else (health insurance, food, transportation, etc). Assume that I will not be paying for anything related to retirement savings.

What are my best options for these things? I assume I will only have a cell phone (no home internet, no traditional television, etc).

I can pay cash for a beater car, so it will not have a car payment or be fancy, but I'm sure it will come with other expenses.

I'm willing to cook and eat rice, beans, pasta, etc. but I will want to travel occasionally, if even to a park or hiking in the mountains (so the car will come in handy).

What health insurance options will be available to me? Are there ways to save money on these things?

If, in reality, $2300 per month is not enough to live alone in Washington, D.C. (though I believe it is), then how much would I need to live comfortably in another city, if the salary is adjusted for cost of living?

Tl;DR: How to live off of $2300 per month in Washington, D.C.
