Most soldiers do not "fight for our rights" or "protect our freedoms". They just...fight.

I hate to rain on anyone's parade, but if you have not actually fought in a war, you have not "fought for our freedoms". You have not protected anything or anyone. You just...fought.

The exception is if you happen to be a veteran of the Revolutionary War. You would have actually "fought for our freedoms"...but again...I'm sure you just fought.

It's a thing people say to try to make the horrific act of war more palatable. "Was it worth it?" "Yes, we fought for our freedoms.". But you didn't. You just...fought. You might have protected the freedom to continue to fight in Afghanistan, the freedom to have a draft and force people to fight for your freedom, or the freedom to march into Iraq and fight for...not sure what you were fighting for there, but you definitely fought.

Not to mention if you are a veteran of any war other than the Revolutionary War, you were a soldier in the United States Armed Forces, and not a traditional freedom fighter anyway.

Edit: A lot of you seem to have these weird delusions that the Germans or Japanese were just closing in on the USA to take over. Not to break your heart but...that was not the case at all. The Germans were trying to take over Europe, and the Japanese were taking over Asia. We decided to attack the Germans, and the Japanese attacked us at Pearl Harbor. The invasion of the USA was not imminent in any way just because they were "evil".
