What is America's grand plan for China?

Seeing that most of the political voices in the United States, have been calling for major confrontation with China for the last half a decade, I would like to know if there is any concrete plan on how this process will look, and most importantly how this process would end? Could anyone point me to any serious academic work, government reports, or think tank evidence?
