I am a mid-twenties, college drop out. I’m trying to get into IT to work on big projects as a project manager.

My understanding of how to get into this career is:

1. Get relevant work experience and coding skills
2. Once I have about 3-4+ years of experience, I can apply for an IT project manager position at whatever company I’m working for or a new company.

I see job openings for IT project managers at huge companies, but none of them require you to have coding skills. Why would a company hire someone with no coding skills to be an IT project manager? Is there a way for me to skip the first step of my plan?

Edit: I’m on mobile, so I can’t see all the replies. Usually you need at least 3 years of experience for most managerial roles. That’s what I meant by the first step.

Edit #2:

I am aware that I don’t have to learn to code to be a project manager, but wouldn’t it help me if I at least have a basic understanding of coding languages? Even if it’s just basic understanding of the coding process, wouldn’t that help me communicate with other coders on the team? I was mostly trying to figure out why companies wouldn’t want their IT project managers to have any coding knowledge. There are a ton of project manager openings at huge companies where the requirement is 3+ years experience and 0 coding skills.
