CMV: Tipping is the worst service industry practice in the United States

Tipping is inherently racist, sexist, ablelist, and discriminatory. It should be abolished immediately.

-Wait staff at restaurants are paid $2.13 because tips are expected to make up the rest of the minimum wage. This was a compromise in 1966 which allowed employers to pay less. So now we are expected to pay servers more? Is this required? How is anyone supposed to know how much to tip for what services? A lot of times I am the only white guy at the table so I get stiffed while they get better service. White tax at work here. Sometimes a server will be very short with me while a table next to me starts a big conversation about the weather or whatever. For some reason they think I have pissed them off. I am a generous tipper. I am a very good tipper for great service. I believe that shared success should lead to a shared windfall. But this practice is a joke.

-Additionally, we now have a trend of tip jars being placed everwhere. This is stressful because even if you give a little you always feel like you are short changing the server. But why? You pay for the coffee. You ordered it. You picked it up. You even tipped the person who served you. So why are we expected to tip them AGAIN. And more. 20% more. The only way I have ever heard tipping of less than 20% described is as "being stiffed". So if I ONLY pay for the coffee and the "service" I received, I am being cheap. So now we get to the point where we are expected to pay 120% of the purchase price of every good or service we get in this country.

-I do not know of a single service industry where tipping is not quickly becoming an expectation. I have been told to tip my tattoo artist, my barber, my uber driver, my door dash driver, etc. I was at a doctors office where the receptionist had a jar that said "tips". I did not tip her. She was paid to do her job. Do you tip your garbage man? Your mailman? Your police officers? No. And if you did they would be required to not accept the tip. Your employers would prevent them from receiving a bribe to do their job better.

-Lastly, tipping leads to an underpaid workforce. The servers that "make so much more" are still minimum wage employees. They are not entitled to any benefits. They are treated like second class citizens because they are allowed to make more than minimum wage. They are not required to be paid overtime. They are not entitled to any benefits. They have to fight with the managers over how much of a tipout they are required to give to the bus staff. They are required to pay for wine and food that is "wasted". They are required to pay to go to classes to learn about the wine menus they are selling. They have to fight over tables to get more tips. They have to share tips with servers, busboys, and managers. All for the right to be treated poorly by the customer. And we all thought pulling yourself up by your bootstraps was the best way to get ahead. I know plenty of servers who shared having to go on government assistance to get through the holidays because they were so broke. But they get a nice tax write off at the end of the year. The only thing worse than tipping culture is the treatment of tipped employees.

TLDR: Tipping is a stupid practice that leads to poor service and poorer employees.
