Am I right in thinking that when a nation invades another it should be considered a collective war crime?

We’ve all heard the phrase, “war crimes should be punished without prescription”. Yet, in my country (USA) the Normans are spoken of as heroes who improved England. This is a lie and an affront to justice. Every aggressor should be punished regardless of time, distance, or difficulty.

In the case of William the Conqueror. He was French. The Normans were Vikings. They were not English. They were not invited. They slaughtered everybody in their path.

Why should war crimes be forgiven because they occurred hundreds of years ago? The families who benefited from that crime are still in power. The blood lines of the families who suffered are still in England.

Furthermore, why should it be so hard to punish modern day war crimes? Russia invaded Ukraine last year and thousands of innocent people were slaughtered. Why isn’t Putin being held to account? Why isn’t Saudi Arabia being held to account for the slaughter it is causing in Yemen?

I know the answer is, “it’s complicated.” But it’s not that complicated. Some nation states have been engaging in war crimes for hundreds of years. It’s time to end that. Now.
