Hi everyone. I’m a 40yo veteran middle school English teacher. First, I’ve never seen this sub more active and I’m glad for that. You all deserve the voices here and I’m glad there is a place for you to speak freely.

Let’s be real, the entirety of this sub is now chalk full of posts venting about the job in general and about the treatment from stakeholders. I’m not gonna point out specific posts because that’s not my aim. I’m just so confused though by the sheer number of people who are counting down the days until school ends and they can quit. Some are even talking about spring break.

I don’t know how to describe my confusion. I just wish I had a magic lamp so I could ask the genii to give everyone a “taste” of what the hell they think they’re asking for.

I have been treated poorly by admin, parents, and students; I’ve been underpaid and overworked, but holy hell, if you think the grass is greener on the outside, you are sadly mistaken. I’ve seen many teachers leave the profession over the years and none of them went on to find a magically better life.

Yes, I’m frustrated with all the shit that is going on. Yes, people are treated poorly and the system is broken. Yes, I’d love to get paid a million dollars and have smaller class sizes, but I would have to be dragged kicking and screaming from the classroom.

Now, I’m not saying everyone has the same personality or the job is for everyone, but if you have the passion and drive to be a teacher and you’re giving that up, I don’t even know what to tell you. People are so quick to say how the system failed them when they joined knowing full well what they were getting into.

I think the biggest problem we face, aside from money, is the teaching pipeline. The fucking universities that are pumping out these young, dumb, and eager educators are gross. Cash cows, especially if you’re an older teacher looking to transition. And don’t even get me started on the student-teaching thing that doesn’t even exist anymore. I ask: how can anyone become an effective teacher without completing a student-teaching residency? I just don’t understand that. I’ve never had an experience in my adult life that was more valuable than that.

I don’t think this is what the profession needs, more and more people seeing it as a foot in the door to whatever else. I just don’t get it.

Anyway, I guess that’s my rant. I’m not here to criticize anyone who posts about being treated poorly. I just can’t help but wonder why anyone would ever become a teacher knowing what the fucking job is.
