My wife and I are in the car, my kids are in the backseat. My usually very quiet 7 year old suddenly says "I don't like Trump". My wife and I look at each other, knowing this is a perfect opportunity to have a talk.

Son: "I don't like Trump"

Me: "I don't either, why don't you like Trump?"

Son: "All my friends don't like him, and I don't like him either."

Me: "I don't think it's fair to not like someone just because your friends don't like them, why don't you like him?"

Son: "I heard he doesn't like people who aren't white and doesn't like people with brown skin."

Me: "This is true. The President has said some not very nice things about people with brown skin, and people who come from a different country. What do you think of that?"

Son: "I don't like it. My friend Emma is brown and I like her. We have fun in class."

Me: "Yeah, Emma is a sweetheart. I'm glad you like her."

Son: "Yeah. I think we should get a new president."

Me: "Maybe soon. This is why it's so important to vote when you grow up."

I'm a 37 year old man, but I almost cried. I don't think my son knows he's hispanic, he is very light skinned, his father is hispanic though. And he's right, his friend Emma is brown. Just knowing my son is so kind to Emma and vice versa gives me so much hope.
