I am 32 and have a wife and 2 kids. I work in IT as a cloud architect for a company that is in a niche field but doing quite well. They do some work for the US Government (not classified), they do some work for fortune 500 companies (nothing super interesting) and they have about 30 other clients. They are based in the US and they have about 10 locations.

My whole career I have been there. In fact I got there at the same time as the company was founded. I was then 22 and we had 3 people in there. Now we have about 300.

I really love the company, I love my job, I love everyone I work with, I am paid well, I have paid my education (engineering bachelors, 2 master's degrees) fully on my time with them. I have been able to work remotely for 10 years. I have reached the 3rd highest level in the company (right after 2 C levels). I am close with the founders. The company is around 500 million in annual revenue and we are growing at 50% YoY but we have been profitable for the last 5 years.

This is the company I have always dreamt of working for. And this is the company I would never leave. They are also on the path to IPO in 2026.

I was already considering buying a house this year. But things have just taken a turn to the more complicated and I am really not sure what to do or at least how to approach this.

Yesterday at 9:30 I received an email asking me to go to the main office. I had no idea what was happening and very little time to go there (I am an hour away). I had no idea what was happening and did not know if I had time to make it. I got a backup email at 9:45 saying all hands at 11:00. I got there, made it in time and they told us the company had been acquired by a competitor. They did not tell us the name or any other details, just that the news will come out in a couple of days. The same interested party that bought us a little over a year ago will continue to have a stake in our new parent company. They told us that they will have more information in the coming months about how things will change internally and that they would continue to do business as usual.

I am really scared. I know we are still in a process of flux that will play out over the next few quarters but I am really in a tight spot if I lose my job. My wife is a stay at home mom for our 2 kids. We were going to get a house this year, we have a lot of debt and savings are not as big as they used to be (we have about a year's worth of expenses but I would need more than that for the house).

What are the chances that I keep my job? I am a technical specialist and I have thought that if we would be acquired it would be a non technical company that would see value in us. This is not the case so how do you think the integration will go? Do you think we will be laying people off?
