What if Earth is like one of those uncontacted tribes in South America, like the whole Galaxy knows we're here but they've agreed not to contact us until we figure it out for ourselves?

People say "well if there's aliens then they must have visited at some point" but what if the aliens have a strict "don't contact" policy for any civilisation that hasn't developed to a certain level, like the Americans and Brazilians do with those tribes that haven't been discovered yet.

They know we're here but they're just watching from afar, maybe even taking some chambers polls to see if we should be allowed to join the intergalactic community yet.

'Can we contact Earth yet?'

* 80% No - they still have wars and Trump's in charge

* 14% Yes - they've figured out how to make decent pizza

* 6% - I'm an actual American and I think you mean Brasil, you heathen

Edit: I just had the idea that Earth might be like one of those survivors of those isolated people who are found and try integrating with society, but the culture shock kills them, so that's why we've never been contacted yet.
