How to release a cat?

I never had a cat, but I'm thinking about getting one (3 months old). She's supposed to come next weekend, but I don't have a cat yet, and I want to do everything right. Unfortunately, I don't have anyone who has a cat and could ask for advice. The general information on the net seems to be contradictory in many places. I've read that you should keep the cat in a small area for the first few days, or the first week, or even release it right away? Is there a generally agreed-upon approach on how to release a cat at home? Or is everyone doing it a bit differently? I would be grateful for tips, although I'm sure that a cat is much easier than a dog, but I want to do everything right and not stress myself or the cat.

Tl;dr: I've never had a cat, I want to make sure that the first days with the new cat go smoothly for both of us.
