I have only been to places that are “trendy” or have been commercialized. What am I missing?

I have only been to places that are “trendy” or have been commercialized. For instance, I haven’t been to Italy, but I’ve been to Spain twice, I haven’t been to Japan but I’ve been to South Korea twice, I haven’t been to Iceland but I’ve been to Ireland twice. If I were to go to Iceland I’d want to go to the blue lagoon, if I were to go to Japan I’d want to go to Tokyo, if I were to go to Italy I’d want to go to a vineyard and eat pasta in Florence.

I’ve asked friends and they’ll be like “I’ve only been to this part of Japan because I love Japanese culture and food” or “I’ve only been to this part of Italy because this is where our grandparents were from.”

I’ve been to places like Costa Rica and found a little spot that allowed me to disconnect, but I think that our modern day society has created an expectation for vacations and we view vacations and traveling as something like going to the beach or going to a city for food. I’ve realized I don’t find joy in traveling anymore because I’m only going for the social media minute.

What am I missing?
