Google is letting a small number of Gmail users try a new feature that lets users add generative AI to their emails. The AI-powered tools, called "Magic Write" and "Magic Reply," will be available to "a small percentage of Gmail testers," and will be used to suggest responses or even generate entire emails, according to a blog post from Google.

Magic Write lets users click a blue button with a lightning bolt, which will then allow them to describe the email they want to send and let the AI do the writing. The post also says that this feature can even be used to change the tone of an email, or to make an email longer or shorter.

Magic Reply is an upgrade to Smart Reply, a feature that has been available for some time, and makes suggestions for a reply to a sender by using generative AI. In the example from the post, a reply is suggested and "based on what you type," the AI will make suggestions to make the reply more specific.

The post also says that testers will be able to give feedback "in real time" to the AI and tell it what they're looking for in a suggested response.

While not all Gmail users will be able to use this feature yet, the post also says that the feature will be available to Google Workspace users, who will be able to turn it off if they want to.
