Every year I make a large paper flower to put on my room door. This year I made a large hibiscus. I live in Hawaii so I went with the state flower. I’ve been asked why I don’t decorate much or if I’m lazy for not decorating as much as the other teachers. I’ll share how I made this amazing flower.

I saw this on Pinterest when I was a student teacher in 2018 and I great way to decorate my room and get the students involved. I learned how to make paper flowers through YouTube. I used some colored paper that I had left over from a former project and made a large flower and put it in the center of a bulletin board. Students got to make their own flowers to decorate the classroom. I kept the large flower and brought it to my new school when I got a job. The following year I made a large orchid and put it on my door. I kept it safe over the summer and then brought it back the following year and made it into a wreath.

This year I made a large hibiscus for my door and used the large orchid and put it on the opposite door. I made smaller flowers with my students and we made a garland to connect the doors. I did this on a small budget. I already knew how to make the flowers, I already had green paper and scissors left over, and I got the colored paper on sale. I spent less than $5 on this project.

It’s been a hit with the students, parents, and colleagues. I love that I could get the kids involved and it creates a sense of community in the classroom. It’s a great way to have the kids express themselves artistically. If you’re on a tight budget and can’t decorate a lot, give this a try. It’s also a fun and easy lesson if you’re a new teacher and need something on short notice.
