How would you redesign the US if you could?

This has been in the back of my mind lately and I was curious what other people thought.

What if you had the ability to go back and just totally restart the US? How would you lay everything out, what would you change, what would you keep the same?

I’m talking anything and everything. Geography, states, government, culture, anything and everything.

In a super oversimplified and brief outline, here’s what I have come up with so far.

**State Layout:**

* All states are named by language family ex. English, Spanish, French, Arapaho, Finnish, Swahili, Korean etc.
* States are not necessarily based on language or ethnicity, it’s just simply a name
* States would be designed around the natural geography of the land
* States would be smaller, but more numerous
* Would aim to have states with a similar climate
* Many states would be landlocked
* Many states would have only a tiny portion of sea front access
* Overall I believe it would be easier to run smaller portions of land, and it would be easier for people to agree on rules in a smaller space and smaller groups of people. Plus, it would be more local, and communities would likely have more people involved with state governments
* I think there would probably be upwards of 200 states

**Government:**

* The government would be overall simplified
* There would be a lot more responsibility put on the states
* There would be a lot less control on personal lives, people would be able to do more of what they want in their own homes, communities and states
* The federal government would have a lot less jobs, a lot less spending, and more transparency
* There would be a third branch of government that is made up of citizens who are randomly selected and serve for a very limited time, years not decades. This would be a check on the power of the other branches, as well as a way to get everyday voices into the highest levels of government
* The president would have more power, but would only serve for a very short time, no more than two years
* The supreme court would have term limits, and there would be more justices
* More decisions would be made by the states
* Less decisions would be made by the federal government

**Education:**

* All education would be free
* This means 100% free college, trade schools, special needs schools, school for the deaf, hearing impaired, visually impaired, and any and every other reason a specialized school might be needed
* Schools would be much smaller and more specialized, with more teachers and more one on one time
* Students would have a lot more options on what classes they could take, and would have more access to classes in multiple schools
* More schools would offer classes to learn sign language
* More schools would offer classes in different languages
* More schools would offer classes in different English dialects
* Schools would place a higher emphasis on the arts and music
* Schools would be totally separated from religion

**Economy:**

* A universal basic income guarantee
* As close to a 1:1 ratio of minimum wage to living wage as possible
* Universal healthcare, dental, eye, and plant based mental health care
* No student loan debt
* No medical debt
* No taxes on food, medicine, and medical supplies
* Taxes on consumer goods
* A lot more employees would have health insurance, vacation time, sick time, paid parental leave and more
* Many things that are currently illegal would be made legal and regulated, like weed and gambling
* There would be a lot more focus on the climate and sustainability
* There would be more protections in place for workers
* There would be more protections in place for consumers
* There would be a lot more government regulation on businesses
* There would be a lot more government support for small businesses and start ups

**Healthcare:**

* Healthcare would be a human right
* Everyone would be guaranteed access to care
* There would be more emphasis on preventative care
* There would be more emphasis on mental health care
* There would be a lot of options for getting care
* There would be in person care, virtual care, and in home care
* There would be a lot more access to care for rural communities and communities that lack healthcare workers
* There would be a lot more support for healthcare workers
* There would be a lot more options for different types of care, including alternative medicines
* There would be a lot more focus on public health
* There would be a lot more focus on community health
* There would be a lot more inclusivity and less prejudice towards certain groups of people
* There would be a lot of options for reproductive care, including totally free birth control and safe access to abortions

I’m sure there are many holes and flaws in my system, but it’s a rough idea of what I think I would do if I was given the chance. I think overall it would be a very big cultural shift towards happiness, wellness, and community. It would be a big shift culturally towards more focus on taking care of our planet, taking care of each other, and taking care of ourselves. It would be a big shift towards more inclusivity and less prejudice.

I’m curious what changes you would make. WYR go back and totally restart the US? How would you lay everything out? What would you change, what would you keep the same?

**Edit:**

Please be more specific with your changes. What exactly would you change, and what would it look like?
