CMV: President Trump is not the worst president America has ever had

President Trump is not the worst president America has ever had. Given the controversial nature of this issue, I'm going to go outside the standard "If you don't think [insert thing here], you're wrong/nothing will change your mind" type of mindset. I'm happy for you to change my view, I want to have my view changed. I dislike President Trump - although I think he is better than Joe Biden, I would have much preferred someone else to be president. My hypothesis is that the president who made the decision to drop nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was worse than President Trump is. Both President Trump and President Truman have made decisions that have had huge negative consequences, President Trump's mishandling of COVID-19 has killed tens of thousands of Americans and many more worldwide. I would argue that President Truman decided to drop the atomic bombs on Japan in an attempt to get Japan to surrender in order to save American lives that would have been lost in the invasion of Japan. However, the bombs did not actually save lives in the way that President Truman may have thought they would. The bombs killed hundreds of thousands immediately, and many more from cancer in the following years. When I was in Hiroshima, I went to a museum that showed pictures of people's burns from the bomb, as well as pictures of people who had been burned or injured by the bomb and showed them next to pictures of burn victims from fires. The burns from the bomb were much more severe than the burns from the fire, and the injuries were also much worse. Japan was already on the cusp of surrender when America dropped the bombs. It's possible that dropping the bombs may have sped up Japan's surrender, but the Japanese government's reasoning for surrender was not the atomic bombs, but the Soviet invasion and declaration of war on Japan. It's not a coincidence that Japan surrendered on the same day that the Soviets declared war on them, and that they surrendered after the Soviets had invaded. Therefore, President Truman's decision to drop the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki killed many people in Japan. Many Americans also think that it was necessary to drop the bombs because otherwise Japan may not have surrendered, and an invasion of Japan would have been much worse for all parties involved. This idea is based on a flawed understanding of history, but Americans are often misled and given a flawed understanding of history. While America is a democracy, it is (or at least was at the time) very easy for the government to do things that most Americans do not agree with, such as the internment of Japanese Americans or the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. Many Americans thought that the 9/11 hijackers were from Iraq, and most Americans still don't know that Iraq had nothing to do with the attacks. To prove that Americans are often misled and do not know enough about current events to make informed decisions about who to vote for, I would like to reference the survey where something like 50% of Americans could not point out Iraq on a world map.

[EDIT]: I would also like to point out that President Trump is an elected official. President Truman was not elected. Because of this, it can be argued that President Trump was the will of the people while President Truman was not the will of the people. President Trump's election represents a flaw in America's democratic system while President Truman's election does not.
