India at that time was ruled by Hindu Kings and was mostly prosperous. The people were brave, warlike in spirit, virtuous, and strong. The country was rich with gold and precious stones. The fruit in India is plentiful and the rivers swarm with fish. Wheat and barley are sown, as in other countries, but rice is more common. The Indians do not devour the bodies of the dead, but rather burn them, as is also the practice of the Chinese. The inhabitants of the north eat bread, but those of the south live exclusively on rice. No one in the kingdom drinks wine, nor do they have vineyards. They do, however, drink a liquor made from rice, sugar or palm sap called sura. Should any person be found to have drunk enough sura to become intoxicated, they would be punished in this manner: a small incision would be made in the head and all of the hair would be pulled out.
