So much hate for Microsoft.

Been using OpenAI since summer 2023. Love it.

Genuinely prefer GPTs to what Google Bard offers. Most of the time I am not dealing with edge cases. Nor am I requiring specific domain knowledge. So for a myriad of tasks GPTs are great.

I recently hit a brick wall where I had to line up business card numbers to match a 400 page pdf (Book). I created an excel doc with 400 rows and was eventually given a warning telling me 400 row statements are not a good thing for privacy. But the privacy issue was that the doc was all random letters and numbers and no business card info.

GPT was literally matching row 1 with row 100 and row 1 with row 5. Row 1 with row 2.

It eventually did not work and the inaccuracies were a nightmare.

I opened a request with OpenAI and got an automated response saying it was a bug that is being fixed but said a larger model may do what I need.

Long story short I switched to a larger model and it cost me another $70. That really peeves me. I use the product often. But not that often. So yeah, $70 for something I was not sure would even work. But hey, at least it works!

It works great. It works how I need it to work.

Yes, it costs a lot. But I am just not sure what I would do if I was still out of business.

I was able to show a large corporation that I was not just bloviating and gave them sample business cards in an excel. Seriously easy and simple. But yes, $70.

It is what it is. I do not really have another option. I do not have much of a choice. Sure, I can use the free options or much cheaper ones. But I can't afford to pay $60,000 an hour to someone to go through 400 pages and denote which line goes where.

I can't use a company like a temp agency or even Fiverr. Their hourly rate is not anywhere near what I make for my time so even if I had the money to pay, it would not be worth my time. I would be giving away my time. Not to mention the cost of using those companies. I could not afford it even if I had a big company.

So yeah, sure OpenAI costs money. But what do I do?

The only thing I am doing is reducing the number of times I use it is all. But I will always use it. I tried some Google products and I was not impressed at all. So I will continue at $70 every 15 days.

I will continue with the paid service and I will continue to buy larger and larger models until I hit a point where it's not worth it. But that is not now.

So yeah, what I'm really trying to say is that the hate for Microsoft is crazy. Sure, the company has an awful history. But like... OpenAI is not and never was free.

I don't care about the 3rd world. Not in the least. If you cannot afford something in the US or Europe then do something about it. Go to the library and use a computer. It's free. I am not going to advocate for a service to be stolen from the people who have built something worth stealing.

If you are truly upset about this then use a different product in 2025. Heck, do what I did. Use the free version and then shell out $70 if you find it does what you want it to do.

I don't care that OpenAI is not free. If you think you can do better then build it yourself. If a small company like OpenAI can do it then you can too. There are worse things in life than shelling out $70 every fifteen days.

OpenAI does not owe you anything. It's not a free service. The free version is there to get you used to it. So you can use it. So you can become dependent on it. So you can pay for it.

Literally the same thing as Facebook. You get a basic service, but so much of it is locked down and you can pay if you want more.

I use Facebook literally for nothing other than sports pages and news. I really do not care if they lock it down any more. If I want more then I can pay. Sure, I will not pay. But oh well.

Do I wish OpenAI was free? Yes.

Do I think that it should be free? No.

If I were the CEO of OpenAI I would charge people. If I were the CEO of Facebook I would charge people. I would charge people for a lot of things. Like I said: There are worse things in life than shelling out $70 every fifteen days.

I would charge for a lot of things if I was the CEO of OpenAI. And I would not worry about it. I would not worry about it like a cancer survivor worries if they will get cancer again. I would not worry about it as if I was a victim of a sexual assault worrying if it will happen again. No.

I would not give a second thought. If you don't like it then make your own product. Or use a different one.

If you are a lawyer and you don't like it then maybe you can write up a case to take to court. But I am pretty sure they would lose.

I am not sure of much. But what I am sure of is that OpenAI does not owe you anything. If you don't like it then go use something else.

If you are still around and still complaining then you did not use a different product.

So either they are wrong. Or you are wrong.

Maybe OpenAI is wrong. But I do not think so. I think they did this on purpose. I think they are being evil with this.

And I do not care.

I think they are being greedy. But that's capitalism. I am a capitalist. So yeah, I think they are just being a good business. I think they are taking advantage of the situation they are in. Sure, it's not cool. But if I were in their shoes I would probably do the same thing.

All I know is that I don't care. I will continue to use it. In fact, I will sign up for the largest model. And then I will tell Microsoft to add more. I will pretend I do not know that all of the models are the same but with more parameters for longer context. But I do not care. I will do it anyway. I will pretend it's real. I will act like a 12 year old.

I will pretend. I will pretend that line 5 is not being matched with line 1. That line 1 is being matched with line 2. And maybe eventually line 1 will be matched with line 10, 20, 50 or even 100.

I will pay $70 every 15 days and I will pretend I am getting the best value for my money. I do not care if that's true. I just want it to be true. But just like my business cards, I know it's not true.

And I do not care.

I am what I am. I am a capitalist. Sure, I am a hypocrite. But I am hypocrite that will pay for OpenAI... Every 15 days.
