Why do people feel the need to “joke” about cutting people’s throats...

I was at the grocery store, and this guy in front of me had to use a lot of coupons and spent a while. Some guy behind me was being impatient, but when we finally got to the front he made some joke about it being good that he didn’t have to cut my throat. He was laughing. I said I get it but that’s not actually a joke, right? He said yeah I know, it’s off colour humour. The cashier laughed too. My question is, why do people feel the need to create content out of cutting people’s throats. The next day I was at Walmart and the guy in front of me was having trouble with his card and I heard a lady say, “I want to cut him.”

Why do people feel the need to make this so casual. Sure, it’s in a joking manner, but why should violence be the go to thing to say ALL the time. I don’t think it’s funny, I think it’s messed up.
