How do you feel about writing as a form of therapy?

Hello all, I'm just a self proclaimed amateur writer and I've been writing as a hobby for the last couple years. And I don't know if this is the case for anyone else, but I know that for me writing has become a great way to express myself and I'm currently in the process of writing a book that I would like to have published one day.

But my question is: how do you feel about writing as a form of therapy? And would you ever use your personal experiences as material for your writing?

I know that for myself, I've been in therapy for over a year and it has been very helpful for me. But I also feel like my writing has been very therapeutic for me as well. I've written about my mother's death, my struggles with addiction, and other personal experiences, and I feel like it has been helpful for me.

I've also talked to other people where writing has been a form of therapy for them. And I've been in class elsewhere were the teacher has told me that writing is the best way to gain closure, and I agree with that. Because for me I feel like writing is like just talking into a microphone, and for me I'm able to put all my emotions into thoughts and words and I feel like it's easier for me to understand myself and gain closure.

Does anyone else feel this way? Or am I alone in my thinking?
