What is the origin of the Germanic migrations?

The question of why the Germanic tribes migrated southwards has stumped me for a while. As I understand it, the Germanic migrations only truly ended in the 6th century AD with the rising of the modern nation states of Germany, France, Spain, Britain, and Italy. What drove the Germanic tribes to move?
